Two Sides of a Whole – Half-Drag by Leland Bobbé

As I got to work this morning, I could never have imagined to find something so interesting, so colorful and absolutely the kind of photography I’ve always been intrigued by in an article. The online article featured New York based photographer Leland Bobbé and a project he started a few months back after seeing a profile photo on facebook. Sometimes the best things in life start from where you least expect them to, and evolve into a majestic beauty of lighting, color and of course the flawless make-up.

Differently from most photographers I’ve seen so far, Bobbé’s approach is a unique one. Commonly photographers will go for either the beautiful male features of their models, androgyny or in rare cases of full fledge drag queens in order to show a more provocative side to the gender bender role and male sexuality and sex-appeal. Bobbé took a different approach to gender identity and expression by; “Aiming to express the duality of humankind as we enter an evermore-modern millennium” as expressed in the August on line article of Refinery29. It is not easy to capture one’s feminine side be that gay, bisexual, transgender or even straight, but through photography one can provide a window of opportunity to the magic world of sexual expression.

“These images are part of an ongoing series of portraits of Drag Queens in half drag. With this series my intention is to capture both the male and the alter-ego female side of these subjects in one image. Through the power of hair and makeup these men are able to completely transform themselves and find their female side while simultaneously showing their male side. These are composed in camera and are not two separate images joined together” says Leland Bobbé in an interview published on July 31 in Italian Vogue Magazine and I couldn’t agree more.

I would like to extend my admiration to Leland Bobbé for his work and I would encourage you to visit his website where you will find a diverse portfolio allowing you to experience something different for every photography fan out there.
